Hi all, I'm new to this site so i hope you can help me out.

I'm keen to buy an Audi A4, they seem like solid cars and just the job for family travel. I'm a bit confused as to why they are only 8 valve though (the 1.9TDI). I assume there are no 16 valve Audi A4's of this age, diesel-wise?

Also, what do i need to look out for when buying one?

    Thanks

hi mate the 1.9tdi a4.s are all 8 valve and to be honest its all you need for every day economical driving . i have got a 2004 1.9tdi sport avant remapped to 170 ish bhp i get a genuine 50mpg on a motorway run and its been the most reliable car i have ever owned 170 quid a year tax no oilpump issues like the later 2.0 16 valve that came out in 2005 . just make sure its been well looked after with regular good quality oil changes you need a specific oil for the pd engine quantum longlife 3 from vw audi dealers or as i use castrol edge 5w30 longlife and i change it every 10.000 miles make sure there is plenty of life left in the timing belt it costs about 300 to 350 to get it done all rollers and tensioners need to be replaced at the same time also makes good sence to replace the water pump while its in bits . other things to watch out for is knocking from the front over road humps and the like if its knocking it will be the front suspansion arms not dificult to replace but expensive for good quality arms. also make sure all the windows go up and down on the switches and test everything electrical all in all a very good economical car . had mine for two and half years which is a record for me i usually get bored after about 12 to 14 months but i just can not bring myself to sell this one . hope this helps
