I have a 2006 Audi A6 2.7 TDI Quattro which has two cooling fans. I have noted that the right hand fan (looking from the front of the vehicle) does not work. I think this is the secondary fan? The left hand fan (primary fan?) works fine. I have connected a VAG COM and the print out gave the following message: Code 001: 06480 P1950 Radiator fan-V7 difficulty in movement blocked.

The temperature gauage remains at a constant level, no overheating problems, so what is the secondary fan for?
If it is for AC, does this mean that the primary fan is now working overtime compensating for the secondary fan?
Is this a critical problem or can I drive without concern?

Can the fan be repaired or do I need to buy a new one?
If I understand correctly, the fan unit comes with the primary and secondary as one unit (spare part code 4F0 121 003 AC), so I probably cannot buy just one side?
Is the fan a standard component for all Audi and maybe Passats vehicles or is this something specific to Audi A6?

Lots of questions, welcome any advice.
    Thanks

    Hi there,

No idea what each one does I'm afraid, however Audi wouldn't fit 2 unless they were both needed.

I looked at www.rockauto.com and on my car (different engine) it lists 2 fans seperately, indicating you maybe able to buy them individually.

    More info for mine here:

    More Information for VALEO 696017

I'd do a search for your car model and year to see what that throws up. That will give you an idea if you can just change one of them without buying the whole lot.

I had a look at rockauto.com and see that this is for the USA. Thats why they only list parts for the Audi A6 3.2 and 4.2L engine models.
The original Part Code for my model is 4F0 121 003 AC.
    Thanks for your contribution.

Thanks, this helps, as I now understand that I can go for replacing just one side of the unit.
I'm not sure, but isn't one fan larger than the other. If so, this will tell me which is which.
    Thanks for your help.

I have checked the measurements and the size of the faulty fan and it is 42cm, the largest of the two fans.
So this fits in with your quoted 4F0 959 455 K described as left fan, 4200mm in diameter at 400w.

From my research, the fan fits all Audi A6 models (all trim, all engines) from 2006 up to 2010.

Price for a complete unit replacement kit 4F0 121 003 AC (both fans) from the local Audi dealer comes in at a nice £760 (950Euro) + labour.
On e-bay I found the two fans as a unit priced at £200 (250 Euro) + postage.

If I buy just the left side fan (4F0 959 455 K) it is priced around £130 around 160 Euro.

By chance I came across a fantastic sale on at Audi America offering the kit (both fans) at a discounted price (until end July) for 100$.
But will they send to Europe - that is something I will try and find out

    Not trying to upset you...

on 2.0 TDI ENGINE CODES BLB, BNA, BRE, BRF, BPJ, BVG, BYK

    4F0 959 455 LEFT FAN 383MM 400W
    4F0 959 455 A RIGHT FAN 280MM 200W

The petrol engines 6 CYLINDER ENGINES is same as above engine codes BBJ, AUK, BKH, BYU, BDX

For 8 & 10 CYLINDER ENGINES they differ again from the part no in post 4 & 6

It seems there are also variation for the control unit on the fans if you have factory fit towing...

Why ask check p/n's is I do not want responsibility of you getting mucked about...

When I check parts for myself is calculated from my VIN... which I would not ever ask anyone to give me... for others I use engine/year/model/etc...

Thanks for you word of caution.
Sure - one should always check the part numbers compatibility to vehicle spec otherwise it can become an expensive experiment
