Hi all, new to this forum and need a bit of your expert advice. I've got a 2003 1.9tdi sallon and while driving down the motorway, suddenly started blowing out loads of smoke from the exhaust but no power loss. Pulled over onto shoulder then the engine started revving its knackers off. Switched it off then called AA. Guy said that the turbo has blown and drawing oil from the sump which caused the revving. Other than just changing the turbo which is pretty straight forward, what other dammage could have been done ?

    Cheers Jez

welcome to the forum. it depends how high it revved really and for how long. luckily you have an anti stutter valve will kills the air supply in these situations. not all cars do and they keep running with the ignition off, until they use all the oil and seize, or blow up.
you could disconnect the pipe from the turbo to manifold so the turbo's not in use and check it idles fine with no knocking or lumpiness. other than that, all you can do is stick a new turbo on and pray. dont forget to remove the oil supply pipe and either replace it or thoroughly clean it inside, as new turbos hate a restricted supply or bits of carbon going through them.

place a bucket near the boost pipe as it may chuck a load of oil out, and you will need to remove all the boost pipes and intercooler to clean all the oil out. the exhaust will be full as well, so really should be removed and drained, as it will smoke like a big smokey thing for 10 miles or so, which is a recipe for a pull from mr plod.

Hi, disconected all of the pipes, removed the inlet manifold to get to the turbo. The pipe from the intercooler was full of oil so all of that has to come out.The only problem I'm having is undoing the oil feed at the turbo end. Turning the nut but the pipe is turning with it and starting to kink. Any hints or tricks ?

cut the pipe and get a new one. it is recommended to replace it at the same time as a turbo anyway, and is in the warranty stipulations for a lot of turbo suppliers. they can gunge/carbon up inside where they get hot near the turbo, and if any of that gets into the new turbo it will cost you a lot of money.

Jez, how long did the engine rev on itself for ? They suck oil inside the pistons and the rods get bent because of hydrolocking- oil cannot be compressed much hence the rods bending as they are the weakest link ! Hope you did not cause much damage otherwise it's head and oil sump off to replace the bent rods !
