Sent my A4 in today for it's injector recall, after changing out the injectors, Audi kindly called us to say it needs £650 worth of work to replace the oil cooler and which is leaking into the coolant. I've checked and most of the cost is labour, but really is this part really fit for purpose?

I find it hard to believe that my 4 year old car which barely has starship milage, at 70k should really be having a problem like this?

As it has had Full Audi Service History, they are going to ask whether there is any contribution from Audi but I can almost guess what the answer will be, I've searched and see there is quite a few failures of the oil cooler on the 2,0tdi engine.

It really amazes me how a £30k car can be built with parts which are substandard in this day, but I guess Audi like all companies are looking to cut costs.

Has anyone else had this issue with their cars, and did they manage to get it repaired by Audi at a reasonable price?

    Paul

Tell me about it. Went through hell with the BKD engine in a Golf. Driving a BGB now. Won't be going back to diesels any time soon.

Exactly the same happened to me, while having the injectors replaced they informed me I had oil in the coolant system and they would need to investigate as it could be the cylinder head gasket. I collected the car and went to my local garage who said it was likely to be the oil cooler and it was a common fault in both Audi and VW, they replaced the cooler with an upgraded on for £350, problem solved. My A4 has been a disaster. I have owned Audi quattro's for 20 years, living in the North of Scotland the 4 wheel drive is brilliant and with my previous cars never had a major mechanical fault but this car has had the steering rack, the turbo, the injectors and the oil cooler replaced all in 4 years and 40,000miles. WAG are definitely fitting substandard parts at build.

Wow, I wish I'd only come out being stung for £350, even with Audi's goodwill gesture, I still ended up parting with £517

I totally agree, our other car is an older Audi A4 (B6) and it's almost been faultless for the 75,000 miles I've put on it after the 55,000 the first owner added (I say almost as It's currently developing a brake issue which I will find out what that costs me next week) but that was at the time the biggest 1.9tdi 130 BHP they did, the redeye model and was fittted with a heavy duty oil cooler in comparison to the 115BHP model from what I've seen, by the fact that Audi themselves are replacing the oil cooler with a more beefy version, really looks like they cut corners when they first made the cars.

I've also had issues with the clutch switch, again when replaced, the replacement is a much improved design.

Really not the build quality they used to have, the problem is I really love the way the car drives and I'm sure I'll buy another......very annoying.......

I hate to admit, but I am with you, I will end up buying another. I only wish Audi were aware that the people who have supported them over many years are suffering because of their managerial decision to use poor quality parts in has been and should be a quality purchase.
