Engine management light not showing on Sharan 1.9 tid carat - 2003

Hi, went to MOT the car today and was told that because teh EML light is not showing when the ignition is turned to show the lights that it is an automatic failure!

Anyone know how to fix this?

Checked all the fuses I could see and they are OK - he also mentioned that the light for the stability program is not showing up as well which it should.

have they ever shown ? a fault code read would be a start to see if any fault is there and whether the mil should be on.

I dont think so...would a generic reader get any error codes or does it need to be done @ VW dealer?

a generic code reader will show an obd code so should do. you would probably need a more advanced reader to show the mil status and any manufacturers codes. see if there is someone close in the vcds section that could help. sometimes bulbs get taped over so you cannot see that the car has a fault, in order to sell it, or it could just be an electrical fault. if no codes are present and the mil is off, then you just need to suss out why it doesn't come on. same with the esp, but you would need a better code reader to look at that.

Did you ever resolve this? Engine management light does not light on my 2004 Alhambra (4 clock dash) on startup but have had it from new and don't think it ever did.
Also pretty unfair to expect a stability warning light to work on a car that doesn't have a stability control system. Don't think it was ever fitted to the 1.9tdi, 2.0tdi manual only. Suspect it might be the tester that's faulty rather than the car!

Hi, no I did not resolve the issue and I have sold the car since, I checked all the fuses and relays and they were fine, so it was looking like I would have to pul the instruemtn cluster out and have a look

In MOT, it does not matter if a engine warning light is there, not there or indeed lit
