I would suggest that if it has fvwsh then it may be ok, if it can come for £2000

If that's not a full VW history I'd walk away, especially as he's not willing to drop the price.

I just picked up a 2001 (newer shape) Passat 1.8 Turbo Sport with top spec and 60,000 miles, full VW service history for £4,200. It was originally on at £4,999 but I got them to drop the price so I would definatly think again about that one.

Before I bought this car I had an Audi A4 1.9 TDI with 150,000 miles on the clock and it ran fine for a while but then started having expensive problems. It didn't have a full service history and was advertised as 'service history' indicating that it had some, but not full. They are good engines, but need looking after with regular services to keep them living on.

I personally would either expect a price drop or walk away from it and find another. Passats are quite common in the second hand market, shop around.

    Thanks for advice

My experience of VW's is mainly aircooled

I know the TDi engines go on for ever but i'm pretty sure at past 150K there could be some big repair bills looming for clutches cats etc

If they've been serviced on time and every time, especially by VW, then they should last over 150k, but the price your seller wants for that car and without a full VWSH seems a tad steep.

Take a look on www.parkers.co.uk for a price guide.

If its any help with price guide - I just bought a 98 R passate saloon auto diesel 1.9tdi with 115k on for £3k - Absolute showroom condition! not a mark anywhere and FULL VW service stamps. This one DOES seem a bit over priced for a car only 1 year newer.
