Today after inspecting my near side motor I found the dreaded crack again. However the brake is working fine at the moment. I would therefore suggest that it is indeed the crack in the case that causes the gear to seize and not the other way round.

I have put some aluminium tape over the crack as a temporary measure and will do a more permenant repair tomorrow or next weekend. I am pleased to report though that the screws that hold the motor to the caliper have not seized this time. I will post the outcome when I do the repair and report on the condition of the motor when I get it off.
You may well be correct but I have examined alot of these motors and everytime I strip one the gear cluster is getting stiff and pressing on the case as it tries to turn. The wobble gear puts a huge strain on the case every time you engage the epb so may be that causes the crack. Be carefull what you lubricate the motor gears with. I've seen two where the lubricant had softened the plastic gears and wrecked them.

    Just a query....

the OSR EPB stuck on my 56 plate B6 at the weekend. RAC came around and checked it over and found that when they unplugged the lead from the EPB, there was no voltage showing when the switch was cycled. He rigged up a separate fused 12V supply to the motor unit to see if it would cycle and it wouldn't. He then took the motor unit off and wound the brake off manually so the car was at least driveable. He didn't refit the motor (said that it wouldn't fit, I guess he may have wound the brake out too far?
), and tied the cable off. Now I have a car that is driveable, but bleeps continuously. I will be taking it to the local mechanic (was a trained VAG tech), but was wodering if anyone could offer an opinion on whether it is as simple as replacing the motor unit and resetting the ECU(?), or whether the lack of voltage is a sign of a deeper problem.....

Sounds like a new ECU and motor, I have had this a few times.

But the NSR EPB is working fine. Wouldn't that mean the ECU is OK? I am sort of hoping that a reset will cure the problem (optimistic, I know!)

Check the fuses. Each motor has it's own fuse so the fuse may have blown when the motor siezed.

The trouble is they are not fused after the ECU so if a motor fails it can take out a channel in the ECU.

The gear changed from a wobble plate to a planetary gear around June 07 according to this EPB calipers | TRW Automotive Aftermarket . I have the new part number fitted on mine does that mean I may not get the problem as they have worked fine since I got the car ?

Hi All, EPB fault on my B6 Passat (55 plate). Diagnostics report "02431 - Right Parking Brake Motor (V283) Resistance to Movement Mechanical Failure" and then 2 seconds later "02433 - Supply Voltage for Right Parking Brake Motor (V283) Electrical Fault in Circuit".

The first fault sounds like the motor has seized, and I am wondering if the second fault means that it has taken out the ECU with it. Any thoughts?

Also, I am considering replacing the EPB motor asembly myself to save me paying VW hideous amonts of money. Is the assembly easy to get access to and remove? (do I need to remove caliper to get access?)

    Many thanks.

Btw - incredible website Martin - they should give you a knighthood (although I do wonder how you have so much time to do this for free (I assume)).

The only way to find out is to fit a new motor, this is easy but you must have a diagnostic system capable of performing the necessary functions.

Martins site is extremely useful, even I make use of it for time to time.
