    Hi,

I am brand new to the forum! Go easy on me

My friend is having some issues with her A4 2.0 FSI '56 plate. It is showing the emissions light and so we got it scanned and the code is P0171 'Too lean on bank 1'. I have done lots and lots of searching around and it has led me to try the following things:

    1. Cleaned the MAF sensor with electrical contact cleaner
    2. Search for leaks on vacuum hoses etc

I have also heard the that the crankshaft breather hose is quite a common problem and I don't want to sound stupid but I cannot find it! Well at least I think I haven't.

So I have attached some pics of the engine bay in the hope that people could point me towards where to look and common hoses that split. Also I am only looking at the hoses does someone have a good technique to find the leak? I would imagine spraying it with something and running the engine may show a leak but I am not sure what to use?

Lastly, I have noticed that there is a build up and very small leak of water (which I have attached pics of) could this have leaked antifreeze and then damaged a vacuum pipe below?

Just some other info in case it helps - the car seems to idle fine most of the time and there is very little sign of anything being wrong when apart from the odd occasion when the car shakes on idle to quite an excessive amount, but the revs stay pretty constant.

Thank you very much in advance!

goto mvb's for lambda then spray a cleaning agent like brake cleaner around all the breather pipes

You have to much air or insufficient fuel

watch the mvb voltage on the lambda

if it goes mad then you have found the leak

the large circular pcv valve on the rocker next to your coolant pipe is a common fault

the valve flap breaks away inside, remove the unit and suck on the pipe to see if the flap works

acf valve or pipe blocked another and the good old air filter but in your photo you have a missing part off the air filter?

You have to much air or insufficient fuel

watch the mvb voltage on the lambda

if it goes mad then you have found the leak

the large circular pcv valve on the rocker next to your coolant pipe is a common fault

the valve flap breaks away inside, remove the unit and suck on the pipe to see if the flap works

acf valve or pipe blocked another and the good old air filter but in your photo you have a missing part off the air filter?

Wow thanks for all the info, unfortunately I only have a cheap eBay cable and a registered version of VCDS lite and it doesn't connect to the engine when I try the addresses. Thats why we got it scanned at a garage, so I dont think I'll be able to check using the MVB method. When the engine is turned off there is a loud hissing noise coming from the pcv valve you mentioned does that mean anything?

And yes I took the air box thingy off just to have a look

    Again thank you very much!

Great thanks - ok I'll do that in the daylight tomorrow. I was just reading up on it and read it can hiss if its clogged so maybe I'll give it a clean since I got it off tomorrow and see if that helps, is it normal for it to hiss when I turn the engine off?

Put some washing up liquid and water in a squirty bottle and spray it systematically on your pipes. Get someone else to give it a few revs. If theres a leak, it will bubble up.

It's an old thread you have replied to but I have to ask, how would a vacuum leak cause bubbles?

    leak.jpg

The same principle applies to any component suspected of leaking air. Be it a vacuum line leak, valve, intercooler etc.....
