Just bought the above car today privately and only noticed on the drive home a loud siren like sound when I accelerate. It even does it when not driving, pressing the accelerator whilst stopped. It sounds like a police car is behind you.

Hoping i have not bought a car which is just about to cost me a heap of money. Any ideas?

just spoken to the guy who I bought it off and he said it has been doing it since he had it which is 12000 miles ago. A VW dealership changed an intercooler pipe but it didnt change the noise and they didnt seen overly concerned about it. So he assumed it was always going to be like that. No loss in performance it seems.

The turbo is making the noise, it may last, it may not but the only way to reduce (not eliminate, they all do it) is to have the turbo rebuilt but it may need a new turbine and compressor wheel as the tiniest imperfection will make a noise.

Do you think VW specialist will be up to this or should it be taken to a turbo specialist.

A combination of the two is how we do it, a VW specialist to remove/reinstall it and a turbo specialist to rebuild it.

Just had car in at the VW dealership today. They say it is the turbo. The have a colour code system as to how serious it is and they said its amber and said I can happily drive it whilst it makes the noise. GOing to to drive it for a month and see how much it annoys me. They quoted 1000 for a non VW turbo or 1200 for a new vw turbo.

Is that including labour and oil/filter? At a specialist the job is normally just under £1k. The VW turbo they are quoting is not new, it is an exchange recon as the new unit is £1400 on its own, a recon is £860.
