Check whether your central locking pump has two vacuum/pressure outlets. It is located behind the boot side trim, on the drivers side.

If it has twin outlets, and the last letter/suffix of the part number is higher than 'A', your pump has the RF receiver, and you can use the flipkey remote.

You will have to get the correct remote (2 button '4DO837231' for early saloon)

You may have to use vag-com or similar to alter the number in your 'central locking module', in order to let the car know that it is accepting RF 'keyless entry' signals.

It is a better idea to use one of the £25 aftermarket 'keyless entry' kits available on ebay.

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Remote-Keyless...QQcmdZViewItem

I retrofitted the original flipkey system into my 97 A4, but the range was so poor (by design), that i now use one of the 'rightclick' kits. Alarm, 'full closure' etc all work, the range is far greater, and the car locks and unlocks much faster.

If your pump is a one outlet 4A0 type, you could possibly use the early RF (non-flipkey) or IR system.

Fitting instructions used to be available online, but the links now require a username & password.

You may have to register on the Rightclick site to access them?
