This has got to be the w/pump.A slight leak from a gasket would only show in dropping coolant level. If the pump was OK there would be none of these symptoms

i think the water pump has got to come out, hasn't it, to be sure one way or the other. if its fine, stick it back in and leave it parked up somewhere dodgy, if it is goosed, go back to the dealership that said it was fine and let them take a very good look at it.

    *********UPDATE********

    I'm a cheap B%*"a$d!! lol

I stripped it down again and put the NEW thermostat housing on (with the new "O" ring ) and put it back together. I didn't want to strip it down to the waterpump as that is a whole days work and i haven't the time today. The thermostat is an hours job (now i know how to do it with my eyes closed!!!) i have taken it for a good run and give it a real good blast around the country lanes (I've got the love back for her now, put a big smile on my face!!) it is all fixed and running lovely, no overheating issues and the temperature sat on 90 even when it was opened up Hopefully this has cleared all my problems now. I should have listened to the Audi engineers first off. So my guess at it being the Waterpump was wrong (Thank God!!)

I've put the car up for sale today as i've thought long and hard about it and it's really not worth the Hassle that comes with it, i've gone through all the receipts i have with the car and in the last 5 years it has had almost £2,000 spent on it, that's without the receipts for little bits and bobs that most of us don't keep!!! I think it is just one of them cars that will never be 100%
I also think my B6 days are over as it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth with this car. When it was working it was great but when it was playing up (More often than not) it was a pig!! it feels like i've spent more time under the Bonnet than i have in the driver seat!!!

had my car up and down the dealers temp not reaching 90 both times they just changed the thermostat and still it was not reaching 90 would get to about 80 and stay there
so i had a look myself a took the thermostat off and housing and found the housing suppose to have two lugs on the inside where the thermostat locks in when turned mine were broken so state was not sitting properly on the engine thus leaking coolant and overcooling the engine so new housing and coolant temp sensor to be on the safe side and cars bang on now sitting at 90
eye for an eye means the whole world goes blind

Thats understandable you dont want to risk another let down.Lets hope the replacement is the opposite.I have had lots of cars in 50yrs some surprised me with almost perfection like a Maestro that from new never let me down in 6yrs and a Renault that came with numerous faults from new which no one could completely fix and I sold for a pittance just to get rid.Last year bought a 99 Bora V5 that was going for scrap with 169k on it and its a revelation

Sam , I know how you are feeling, but now having spent so much the car is probably good for a long while now, isn't it worth carrying on or have you any other questions on her longevity. Such a shame when a motor p155es you off so much you forget what it owes you and just want rid.
Good luck whichever way you go.
