I posted this in another thread. I thought it deserved its own :-):-):-).

I have a paint bubble on my drivers door. In the last 2 yrs of ownership it has started to become more obvious. .Basically a bubble the size of a small fi.ger nail with very small bubbles around it.

I know people moan about poor Vw quality and I cant fault mine apart from my drivers door. As I'm into my detailing its really got to me.

My first thought was the dealer would say its a paint chip but I know 100% its a defect in the paint.

So to my surprise the guy at the dealer said is it your front wings?. I said no why?. Apparently they are prone to rust. Vw are repainting them foc ad a good will gesture.

I thought great!!!! He checked my wings and said they are mint :-).

Now onto my door. Yes he said anothee common Vw problem. Zinc inclusions. Pleaae explain more I asked. Its a manufacturing defect but is only covered via Vw for 3yrs :-(:-(.

Basically until the admit there is a problem. I either leave it or get it repainted at my cost.

Not happy!!! I'm considering calling Vw customer service. Bur he said you will have a fight on your hands. A year later one of his customers is still fighting it. His car was just over 3yrs old hence Vw wont pay.

The steel for the car is zinc coated, either by continuous hot dip in a zinc pot or by electro galvanising. There's no way to actually get zinc inclusions in the steel itself, but it is entirely possible to get lumps of zinc stuck on the surface if the process isn't quite optimised. The steel manufacturers have automated high speed cameras looking for such defects, but the steel is whizzing along at maybe 5 metres a second or more, so the odd one or two will get missed or ignored. They should be screened out at the press shop or after painting anyway.

VW's warranty is for perforation due to corrosion, rather than for extra lumps of zinc on the surface. So yes, you will struggle to get them to stump up. Having said that, something like this should have been visible from day 1 so if it is a recent arrival, I suspect it isn't what your dealer is saying and all you need to do is wait for whatever it is to perforate. Maybe another year or two.

The other option is that it is just a paint defect as you think but again, this would have been there from day 1.

It has been there since I have owned the car. Nearly 2yrs but seems to be getting worse. Unless it was pointed out you would not notice it.

You are spot on with the process of manufacture. :-)

    Update !!!!!!

Spoke to Vw customer service. Very helpfull :-). She said that I would need to get a vw dealer to take photos and file a report. She also mentioned that doors are not that common with zinc inclusuons but front wings are hence foc repaint.

The local dealer has quoted £200 + free loan car. Watch this space.....

My driver wing had paint peeling off and down to the metal, just a small bit, but 2 of them, I thought it was a trolley mark where someone had bashed it at Tesco!? I touched them up..?

All four doors below the chromeline have bubbles appearing. Had the car since new and these are definently a recent development.
Will be taking to the dealer next month for their opinion.

Could it be rust behind the paint? I had a plastic bumper trim fitted at the rear which to cut a long story short wore away the paint at the underside of the tail gate. This has caused moisture to get in and the paint to bubble at the chrome trim a bit further up the boot. Apparently if it had been left a few months longer my boot could have rusted through. Got my finger out and had it repaired along with the scratches in my rear bumper (cheers Dad) and a dent in my wifes bonnet too. Could be water getting in via a bad seal or blocked drain leading to moisture behind the panel. Good luck anyway.
