Just driving home and heard a significant 'thump' from under the car (sounded like I'd hit a rock) then it happened again, the second time the car lost all power steering... Having had a quick look under the car I noticed there is some fluid leaking from somewhere too.

Does it sound like the steering rack has broken and can the car be limped 5 miles to the nearest garage?

    Car is a 2003 2.4 Quattro

no, don't drive it. if you do, the power steering pump will likely fail, costing you more money, plus, we don't know what has broken or fallen off so the car may not be safe and if the steering does fail in that 5 mile journey, you may crash and end up dead.
Audi 80 tdi avant with 360,000 miles...
