Advanced Key/Spare Key Problems - Please Help!!!

Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to read. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have a new A4 Avant with Advanced Key and think I may have a couple of problems.

Problem 1

After coming back from holidays I realised I had misplaced the advanced key but luckily I had the spare key in my wallet. I was able to open the drivers door and I then slotted the spare key it into the adapter which was in the glove box (as per pg 33 of the owners manual). I then inserted the adapter into the ignition lock and pressed the start button several times to no avail. The car would not start and I have to get the second advanced key from home. Am I missing something or is this a definite fault?

Problem 2

On a seperate occasion, I used the spare key to lock the advanced key in the car whilst I went for a surf. When I came back the spare key would not open the door and I had to go home and get the second advanced key. Any ideas on this one?

The common theme here is the spare key which clearly doesn't override the proper key. I think I will have a play with mine later and see if I can replicate the problem and see if there is a solution.
