I'm having a problem with the ignition switch on my car - a 97 a4 the key turns too far and you have to shift it back to get the gauges/electrical accessories (wipers, headlights, etc.) to function properly again.

I had to replace my ignition switch a while back when the spring return action on the ignition key started to feel a bit odd. The replacement was about a tenner from GSF. On removal could see that the plastic casing which had gone brittle with age, had broken away around the end of the return spring. It's a straightforward enough job, requiring a fairly minute screwdriver (can't remember if flat or posi' - I think flat) to remove the actual switch once you have dug out some paint/potting compound from around the heads, and voila - problem solved!
