when i put my foot on the accelerator the car sounds perfectly normal.

when i take my foot off and the car makes that winding down noise theres a really loud kind of high pitched rubbing noise.

the noise also winds down as the car slows down. it doesnt really make the noise when i put the clutch back in..althought its very faint then.

seems to be all from the front...i can also feel it through the gear stick etc.... but it literally only happens when i take my foot off the accelerator. Could be something to do with the clutch but im not sure...

    any ideas appreciated.

If you are saying that the noise is only when the clutch is disengaged then its likely to be that or the flywheel

    i'll guess diff
on the over run with engine braking,
with clutch released noise would reduce----

It could be the diff, it is common on these models, you need to get it looked at by a VAG specialist.
