    Hey guys.
    Right where do I start.

Well I bought a v6 4 motion 2001 xreg but I think it's got problems and big ones to

The first problem is if it's left sat running it'll start overheating as fans are not kicking in and the water gets boiling hot.

2nd problem my 4motion isn't working and the car will wheel spin on grass or wet road.
Also the ESP switch in dash do t seem to work.

My last problem is I think my dash/ speedo is screwed as some lights are missing when first switch ignition on...

    Any ideas cheers
    Dan

The overheating problem is a common one, the fans have failed. If you look on top of the battery you will see the strip fuse has blown, replacing this may bring back the high fan speed but ultimately you will have to strip the front of the car down to fit two new fans and from VW these are about £325 for the pair although GSF do them for £170 the pair.

Check closely, they crack. Fan failure is extremely common on these cars.

I don't know what they quoted you on so I cannot comment on the price (the fans cost about £600 to replace all in) but the thing that people tend to forget about the Golf 4 4M is it is not an ordinary Golf like the one I have just put a new 1.4 engine in for £3K, the G4 4M was a £24K car when it came out (plus options) and now it is an OLD £24K car and cars do not get cheaper to fix as they age, they get more expensive so what you had was an old expensive car (the used purchase price is irrelevant when looking at repairing a car) so they cost a lot to repair. For example a new engine in a box ready to fit is £3600 plus fitting which adds a bucket full of other parts required (budget for another £1K) and then four days labour to fit it. That means that a new engine in that car costs twice what it is worth.

I'm no vw expert but here goes. I'm a Subaru man got 2. But vw Leicester told me it needed new water pump old ones bust. The fans needed replaced, the engine head gasket needed replaced also a temperature sensor, that was the overheating issue. Basicaly the car overheated to boiling point and blew the gasket..

The 4wd system is trashed the rear diff has done some haldex thing inside plus the sensor needed replaced.
The dash board needs replaced as its led not bulbs and there clearly gone wrong.
And they also told me I need a new down pipe flexi has broken... So all this plus labour costs was why it totalled up. They wanted £85 ph labour...

I can see the £3K now IF the head gasket had gone, which is rare.
