A8 3.0TDI Flashing glow plug light

Hi
I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem with my Audi A8 D3 2004 3.0tdi. The engine lost power and would not accelerate, seemed to be in limp mode. Glow plug light on dashboard is flashing and the gear box would not change up gear properly, had to use tiptronic to change manually. I've got VCDS and it points to a turbo control circuit problem (see auto scan), but there are several other fault codes which were not present before.

Further update, might give someone a clue: The flashing light can be reset by simply turning the engine off and restarting, the car then seems to drive normally unless I exceed about 2200 rpm and the light comes back on and its back into limp mode.

I just had a similar problem. Car running fine. Stopped for a few minutes.. Then glow plug and limp mode. Only 5 ks from home so I limped. My code was also :

BUT
P3348 - 005 - Electrical Malfunction
as opposed to 08... I pulled the turbo controller plug (which was suspiciously loose) and manually moved the actuator through full movement and greased the connecting rod with lithium spray grease (just in case). Then i did the actuator tests via VCDS and it was fine.

Cleared the codes and went for a spin.. Back to normal. We'll see in a few days, but I guess it's worth pulling the plug on the turbo actuator and re-seating and making sure the actuator isn't stuck. Does no harm any way.

Thanks for the reply wjam, I took the car to an audi specialist and they diagnosed a clogged turbo. They took it off and just run some turbo cleaner through it and it all seems to be ok now. I think they had to do it twice because the first time after refitting the turbo they still had the fault. Glad yours worked out ok.

Hi, yes the problem was sorted. It turned out to be the controller for the turbo, this is the electrical actuator fitted on the turbo and controls the inlet vanes. I was told by the garage that replaced it that the controller cannot be replaced separately. I phoned Midland Turbo and they confirmed this so I had to buy a new turbo from them at £700. If you have the same problem I would definitely consider Midland Turbo as their service and prices are the best I found.

Hi Guys,

Just a quick update to say thanks for your help in this matter. I took the car to a specialist in Stockpot - AUDI Doctor. He was the 3rd person to diagnose the fault to the Actuator itself, however, this guy knows what he's talking about as he gave me a full breakdown explanation of the problem, and also said the part was available to replace. Happy to say, the new actuator has now been fitted, and the car is all okay now - no flashing coil light/no engine light - faults gone, and the car has its power back! I just never would have put the fault to this as ive never had a single issue with the car..

Total cost for parts / labour including diagnostic was £330.00 - 2nd user turbo's (not recommended is £400-500) and NEW was priced at £800.00, so in all its a result.
