I have just posted this in the skoda bit but i know there a couple of clever guys here so thought i'd see how it goes here

Hi, a friend at work is having problems with his Octavia.

    It's a 2007 L&K spec 2.0tdi saloon/hatchback, its on 106k miles

The problem he described it that when he went to overtake the car did'nt respond, basically sounds like limp mode but no warning lights came on.

Later that day when going home he said car was fine, pulling like a train.

Today he said when he left home was fine but then just getting onto motorway same again power loss with no warning lights, near work he turned off the engine at traffic lights and upon re-start the car was pulling well again.

Have checked oil which is all good.

I had a look today as i have a passat with a 2.0tdi engine and when started the engine sounds like it has a knocking noise every few seconds, this did quieten down a bit after a few minutes.

Also the engine appeared to be rocking forward now and then, more so than the usual vibration rocking

Its booked in to be code read see if anything is stored on friday but if anyone could shed some light will be good, thanks

It's the turbo vanes, they clog and normally you go limp and overboost code, but even if he has no limp this is more than likely the problem, tell him to go for a 50 mile drive wher he can drive at 70 -80 mph constantly, it may sort it, personally I'd burn it, all 2005 - 2011 are <removed> imo, 1.9 hell yeah, 2.0 hell no unless a CR.

Not yet other than excessive oil comsumption and smoke, but I know a few ppl that have had the oil pump go, and it seems par the course the turbo is only good for 40k, it is what it was a make do engine until the CR was available.

DSG4Me is probably right about the turbo vanes but there are half a dozen other possible causes of the same symptom. The only way to be sure is to do a fault code read (which will narrow it to 2 or 3 possible problems) then if the turbo is still in the frame you disconnect the actuator and waggle it to confirm that the vanes are catching. If it doesn't go into proper limp mode, which only goes away if you turn off the car and restart, then it isn't the turbo vanes.

A quick blast might ease it for a few days or even several weeks but the problem isn't going away and will deteriorate over time from an occasional hiccup to an almost permanent fault.

Don't let anyone persuade him that he needs a new turbo. At worst he can get his own reconditioned on a 2-3 day turnaround. At best, the turbo can be stripped and sorted on the bench in about 90 minutes without special tools if he is handy.

Equally, ignore promises of magic snake oil that you can squirt in and wash all the burnt on carbon away. You need to see inside a turbo to realise that the stuff is like concrete and nothing short of kryptonite or else a chisel, emery paper and lots of elbow grease is going to shift it.

Sticking turbo vanes can do that. A good regular hard run should sort it out. People often drive diesels at low rpm without acceleration and in higher gears. Gives good economy but cokes up the turbo.
I wonder which is best, extra economy vs buying a new turbo ??

We all know the answer to that don't we, a good arguement for buying a petrol car infact.

While were here, mine is overboosting @ 70mph whether I boot to 70 or cruise to 70, no hint signs before it does it, is it possible something else is chucking it on like a dirty egr or faulty fuel pump? code only read overboost and it took 3 quick overboosts to get the eml on, normally it's just the flashing coiled light, I ask because I suspect my in tank pump is ageing and I also get this deep throaty sound from the engine when hitting the angry pedal that I didn't notice before, other funny things is the engine sounds chattery in gears 1-3, fuel brand and amount in tank sets how noticeable it is, with windows open can't hear it at all, windows up and all the noises are in the cabin, tia.
