When I switched on my rear fog light a couple of days ago whilst driving through fog, a "check rear right fog light" message popped up on my dashboard.

While stopped, I physically checked at the back and indeed the rear fog light does not come on when the switch is on. However I can also clearly see that the same bulb is lit up when the boot lid is closed and the headlights switch is set to on! Confusing I know.

I took out the bulb holder to have a closer look and I saw 2 bulbs, one slightly smaller than the other. I think the bigger one is the fog light, and both bulbs seem ok and have not blown.

Has anyone had problems with their rear fog light before?
Do you think it's an electrical problem somewhere else in the car?

Yes, this seems to be a common fault on the new golf. I had a problem with an Alfa Mito DRL inop the other day which uses the same bulb. I had to bend the little wires on the bulb to get it to make contact with the bulb holder. I've had to do it to a few golfs too, both the rear fog and reverse lights.

Also, the lights on the tailgate of the golf automatically switch off when you open it. That had me scratching my head a few months back when I got a set of parking sensors to fit. It took me a while to figure out why I couldn't find a reverse light supply.

I have the same problem with one of the rear lights.
The check bulb warning comes up, then I slam the boot a couple of times to make it work again.

I haven't got round to taking it to the service centre.
I'm giving the car back in two weeks as moving jobs, so maybe the next owner will have to fix it...
Golf Match 2.0 tdi 140 Bluemotion tech, fogs, folding mirrors. Reversing camera didn't make it, so enjoying DAB.

Other motor is a Nissan Pathfinder.

    Hi, thanks all for replying.
I took the car to a dealer for its service and reported the fog light problem. They fixed it by replacing the bulb holder for the fog light.
I forgot to ask them if the bulb holder for the fog light is the same as the bulb holder for the rear light cluster on the tailgate. Does anyone know?

The bulb holder for the fog light has two bulbs, the fog light & a tail light on the O/S.
There is another bulb holder on the N/S that has the reverse lamp & a tail lamp.
So two bulb holders that each hold two bulbs.

We had the same problem and the bulb holder turned out to be faulty on our 11 reg. Changed in 5 mins by the dealer who said it was a common issue.
