Hi I have a 2002 polo 1.4 16v. My parents gave it to me and my partner about three years ago and they had owned it from new. The epc light has been on from about a year before I recieved it and has been checked a few times showing no results but the mechanic could not turn it off. Does anyone know of a way to turn it off without going to the dealer?

Also about two weeks ago the heater stopped working on settings 1-3 and only works on 4. Any ideas on what the problem could be there?

    Cheers

The fan switch sounds like it's died, I think you might need to clean the contacts on it. Do a search- I'm sure it's been mentioned before on this forum.

Re the EPC light, is that the one that looks like an engine, or is it text? Have you got the codes read with a proper VW unit? Might be worth taking the car to a VW dealer or a specialist.

The exhaust manifold on my car had been cheaply repaired by the previous owner (read scumbag used car salesman...) and had promptly rusted straight through, which caused the light shaped like an engine (I don't have my Haynes or car to hand to check what it actually is!) to come on, which was the catalyst and both lambda sensors dying. Due to the design of the 1.2l engine, I needed the whole assembly replacing, with a new manifold, new cat and new lambdas. Car felt like it was much faster afterwards, and was less thirsty too.

This happened om my daughters 53 plate Polo about 18 months ago and a posting on this forum led me to suspect the brake light switch for the EPC light and the blower problem the fresh blowers series resistor.

I changed the brake switch very easily and it only cost £10 - it controls brake lights and EPC, are the brake lights working?

Th blower resistor is a DIY job if you don't mind doing it and takes about one to one and half hours which is mostly removing and refitting trim and glove box.

The part is quite cheap (about £20) and readily available to order from VW, suggesting it is a common problem, all fan speed s worked fine afterwards.

If you fancy doing it PM me and I will forward the relevant info & diagrams for the resistor job.
