Hello everyone, am new to the forum.

I have a Polo MK3 1998 S-reg 1.4Cl (this is the newer MK3 with the diagnostic panel on the speedo, not the 1995-1997 mk3.

Having troubles with the Speed sensor, think it's also referred to as the VSS sensor? It's solely for the speedo (and clocking the miles up). The rev counter still functions.

Last year my speedo stopped showing speed and found out this sensor (screwed onto the gearbox I think) was bust - saw that the little square plastic pin in the sensor had twisted and broke. I replaced this with a second hand one from a scrappy, and had no problems for over a year until it happened again 2 weeks ago on a long motorway drive back. Unscrewed the sensor, and pin twisted and broke.

Got another sensor from another scrappy, screwed it in, everything working again and just a few days later and it's happened again! plastic pin twisted and broke!

Is there something I'm doing wrong when screwing this sensor on, or is there something I need to lubricate on the stub that I screw the sensor into? Or could i have a potential issue with the gearbox?

As for the car it drives perfectly, stable when idle, doesnt go off, no misfiring, gears engage perfect, clutch engaging, i've had no actual mechanical problems with this car since I bought it a few years ago, no breakdowns. Mileage is mainly town driving with some high speed mileage once a month.

Help!
