My friend has an 56 Plate Audi A3 1.9 TDI. They have only had it a few weeks but three times now it has got stuck in reverse gear. Only way to get it out is switch off the engine etc.
Anyone any ideas what the problem could be?

    Thanks
    Lee

I noticed in my 2009 1.9 TDi when reversing it won't allow you to take it out of reverse until stationary.

Don't know if this is what you're describing though.

Assume its a dsg, could be the gear unit that has the gearstick attached or the dsg lock/barrel has a glitch, although the latter shouldnt take effect until its in park, but hey nothings impossible.

You can actually get your finger into below the gear gaitor & push on a microswitch that sits below the gear lever when its in park to test if this is functioning ok.

Its just a standard manual 5 speed box. This happens when the car is completely stationary.

Really, manual stuck in reverse, thats gotta be mechanical then, clutch issue maybe, so no amount of clutch movements will free it?

There is a possibility the Clutch is not clearing the Flywheel when the pedal is depressed, causing transmission of drive through the geartrain. Does the car` creep` when the pedal is depressed? (no brakes applied!) If so, drive is still going through the box.

OMG please tell me this is not a common issue for Audi A3 🙈 I have only just bought the car and I have this problem...stuck in reverse! It happens only in the morning 1st thing...I had to stall the car to try and get it out of gear and took 10 attempts. Then it wouldn’t go into gear at all! After waiting 15min I had to put the car into gear with the engine off then start it. Managed to get it going then after 15 min it was all OK...this has happened every day so I’ve sent the car back as I’ve only had it a few days.

I know this is an old thread but what was your outcome.
My mums a3 tdi is doing just this .
Engine off and it will come out .
I've heard of shims you can pop onto the end shafts,,,might be for a different problem though.
My mums mechanic has quoted her £2000 for a new gearbox and clutch etc
Her cars not even worth that 🙄

This usually happens when the clutch fails to disengage properly.

The engine is still trying to put power through the gearbox & stopping the gears from being able to be moved.
That's why turning off the engine then frees the gearbox off.

Could be the clutch is worn out, could be a leak in the clutch hydraulics, master cylinder/ slave cylinder or hydraulic pipe leaking.

I think you may need to find a more competent mechanic.
