I have a 1997 Passat TDI and have just fitted a new turbo after the shaft on the old one snapped and drained the engine of oil. Can anyone tell me if it is common for the engine still to smoke after the change. All the pipes were cleaned of oil as was the intercooler. The oil level does not appear to be dropping. Could it just be burning of oil from exhaust. If so does anyone how long this should take.

Thanks for that. Hardly noticeable when driven steady but a little heavier when you put your foot down. Will keep an eye on it but car drives well with no performance problems.

One of my mates drove up the road after a land rover turbo let go and filled the exhaust. The whole road came to a standstill. Red faced on the way back! Ha ha

Theres a good clip on youtube of a Landrover Turbo going. Definately worth a watch. I don't think I have anything to worry about, the new turbo seems to kick in fine.

It can take 150 miles to stop smoking, but be aware that the boys in blue can issue
a prohibition order, which means its not permitted on the road until the emissions
are tested and are within accepted levels, and thats a new exhaust system.

    Regards
    Jim

I had a turbo go on a Saab 900 years ago. Theproblem is that load of oil gets dumped in the exhaust so after you change the turbo there is still loads of oil in the exhaust system. Which then burns off.

Many years ago, I changed the turbo on a Leyland National bus, which had put a lot of oil into the exhaust. On road test in the dark, pulling hard up a long hill, I had about a three foot flame out of the (sideways facing) exhaust. Certainly made the cars coming the other way move over! Seriously, you need to go for a long hard drive to clean out the exhaust.

sorry for leaving it so long to reply to everyones advice. I'm still a little cautious about the car. Have taken it out for a few short runs and given it some welly, and still feel uneasy about the smoke. As I said in an earlier post the car shows no smoke when driven normally, but when I keep my foot to the floor it leaves a trail of smoke behind but its not thick smoke. Oil level is staying the same as is the water.
I can't think there would anything else wrong. I was originally concerned there could be problems with the rings, but I think that would produce smoke even when driven normally. Will just keep driving.

If it's not using oil, then keep driving it. It should clear eventually.
