    Hi all,
Been having a problem with the fuel pump (or lifter pump) in the fuel tank of my Passat. Its a 2002 PD130 estate.

Has been functioning on and off for the last few weeks and now has stopped altogether (normally you can hear it pressurise when you turn ignition on). Ran a diagnostic with VCDS but returned no faults but fuel economy seems to be suffering as well.

Any idea what the best way to proceed is? Should I just try replacing it or are there any other know faults ie bad wiring in looms etc.
Checked the fuse a while back and that looked fine, you can also hear a relay click from neasr the pump when the ignition is turned on so pretty sure its getting power of some sort (unless the relay is for something else...)

    Thanks

I would check the power to it first at fuse 28 then at the pump across the green/yellow and brown wires.

    Ok will do.
I take it that with the ignition on it should have power continously?

Ok had a look this morning.
    Fuse is good.
Across all the wires I'm reading 14volts with the engine running.
Tried connecting the plug whilst the engine is running and I can hear a faint humming noise coming from the pump area, so I guess it is working then? Normally in the past the pump has made a gurgling noise when initially turning it on, but doesn't seem to do it at the moment....hence I though it wasn't working.

Only other thing I can think of to confirm the pump is working is to check if there is flow from the fuel line.

It may be that the impeller has come off so as you say, you will need to check the delivery.

    Just a quick update:
Checked the supply line to fuel filter this last weekend. Fair head of pressure and flow is produced when ignition switched on even though pump doesn't sound like its pumping.
So I guess it is working....
