Media Card - Empty (Unreadable)

Just picked up my A4 TDI at the weekend it's an early B8 2008 2.0 TDI Multitronic. Although it has not been a successful start:

This question is about the SD Media card reader, when I put in my 4GB SD Media card it just shows as empty on the display, now its a SD micro card in an adaptor so I tried it with the card out of the adaptor the msg changes to "Unreadable" making me believe that it is working.

According to all I have read my system should be able to take cards up to 4GB - the only thing I can think of is that it has an issue with adaptors.!

Is there a setting I have missed or should check?

Any ideas - welcomed.

Try a 2gb card. The system won't accept SDHC cards which most 4gb cards are.

I think a software update cured this though.

A software cures it for some cars (around 2008/9) I believe but not the earlier ones IIRC.

Have you also made sure you have formatted it correctly?

Try re formatting to Fat32, also try dropping a handful of MP3s into it but not in a folder.

As already mentioned cards above 2gb are sdhc - if you have a 2gb try that.

Also I have used adaptors for micro sd cards and have found the odd one temperamental.

Hi, you can get 4GB SD (nonHC) cards.

I posted this on another thread about CD cards.... Hi all, I'm new to this site but been following it for a few weeks now leading up to me buying my first Audi (and a great help it has been too!). I followed this thread with great interest as I bought a May 2008 A4 Saloon - I also already had a 8GB SDHC card and couldn't wait to try it, but sure enough it didn't work.
I resigned myself to the fact I'd need to buy some 2GB cards till I remembered that for a while you could get 4GB cards in both SD and SDHC, not many manufacturers made them and sometimes they were a bit of a hit and a miss. Mines arrived today and just tried it ........... and it works!! I'm off to order a few more before they all go (also great for my old non SDHC TomTom).
The only other non HC SD card I could find was £49.99!

Thanks A6_Chris 2GB worked, so it looks like I will need to find a cost effective way to get a software upgrade done..

J_B204, yea all was formatted ok looks like its the HC issue as Chris highlighted.

I bought two of the 4GB cards mentioned by JohnC17 and can confirm they work fine in my 58 reg A4 Concert radio. Using iTunes I was able to get 450 MP3's encoded at 256kbps on each card. In the car they sound great.

I've got 2 4GB SD cards new and sealed that I'll sell for £7.50 inc standard post. Bought for my old A4 but then I ended up with a MY2010 with 3G and SDHC capability hence they didn't get used.
