    Hi

I'm changing my front brakes on my MK.3 Gti but have realised I have no/can't find the locking nut key! Is this hidden somwhere that isnt obvious on the car, and if I don't have one wher can I get one from as I can't get mywheels off!!

    Cheers!

Possibly in a little pocket in the toolkit, with the spare wheel?

if you can't find it you can but a tool that goes over the locking nut and clamps over it so you can remove it, you will need new locking nuts as the one i use makes a mess of the locking nut because it cuts into it to get it clamped

If its a VAG locking nut, visit the dealer and kindly ask them to remove them for free.

(dealer sometimes lends me wheelnut keys if i get a car in with no key)

If they are aftermarket, either buy an identical set (£15ish) or as Fraze said use dynomec type or reverse thread sockets, but these are ideally designed for airtools, and its almost impossible to get the initial 'bite' without one.

The 'hammer a socket onto the bolt' method works in a pinch (even with rotating sleeve bolts).

If you have enough access room, a punch and big hammer can also do the job.

Or you could even try welding a nut onto the bolt.

There used to be tools available for removing various types of 'post/socket' locking nut with no damage, but these dont seem to be available or advertised anymore (for obvious reasons, lol)
