    Hi all
My A6 quatro 2.7tdi is currently on variable service. It was serviced 8weeks ago.

1.If I do an oil and filter change in 12months what will happen to the service indicator will it go up for "miles to next service"?

    2. Does the service indicator go up and down during the service period . Mine is currently saying 600+ days and 8600miles to next service. I was expecting it to say more. I intially did a 500mile round trip straiught after the service and since then I have always done 30-40m trips although it does sit in the garage for probably 4 days a week. I have done about 1000miles now

    Many thanks for any advise

    Mab

Variable servicing depend on many engine parameters like miles driven, total, hours usage, number of bonnet openings and oil quality/clarity. You can switch between one or the other using VCDS. When dealers service your car, they reset these counters in the cars computers. so to answer your questions in order.

1.1.If I do an oil and filter change in 12months what will happen to the service indicator will it go up for "miles to next service"? - It will keep ticking down until you reset the computer. You are supposed to do both things together (oil change and computer reset). The behaviour will depened whether your car thinks it is on annual or variable servicing. if you wish to change the type of servicing, you need to change this by adaptation of the various computers using VCDS

I have done about 1000miles now - Days go down to 0, or service now/overdue.. Same applies to miles

Also keep in mind what you are trying to achieve. By that I mean if you just want to do a DIY oil change inbetween the garage long life ones then there's no need to reset the computer as you are just adding an interim change of your own.

If however you are doing all the services yourelf then you would be wise to invest in a VCDS from Ross-Tech as at some stage you will need to be resetting the SRI properly.

Yep sounds like fixed. Fixed is roughly 9000-10000 miles.

Thanks Chris. I did wonder if that was the case as the original dealer(Approved Audie) had it swicted to fixed when I purchased it and they did the service before collection. Is it to late for my current garage to switch it now?

    Many thanks

You could get it changed, but your garage would have to change the indicator settings to compensate for the mileage you already covered since the service.

What mileage do you do per year?

I have owned my car 8 months, did first oil change in Jan 12. Car was set to flexible, I thought fixed would be right for it as mostly local driving. Originally computer recommend service in 9000 miles then slowly it crept to over 11000 and has now climbed to 16000 miles with the recent months worth of mway driving...
I will still do oil change in Jan 13 but good experiment to see what it recommends....
