if it's the USB to obd2, you may need to install the relevant drivers to get the lead to work with VAGcom.

Sorry, I should have included that in the other post - I've got the correct drivers installed. (they came on the cd supplied with the lead)

They both have the same interface, and the cable seems to fit ok.

Does anybody have any ideas about what I may be doing wrong?

Is there a set procedure for connecting these things?

@eshrules: sorry mate, if i'd known you sell these things I'd have got it from you instead. Anyway maybe I'll need a new one!!
    hiya mate, no problems.

alpha bid is a top notch seller i got my first ever scanner from him 3 years ago

in regards to the lead not working, have you made sure the comm port you've got the software set up to use, matches the comm port in your device manager accessed through the control panel?

Ah. I didn't check that. All I did was set up the lead to use the software using the 'Test' routine (i.e. first use setup).

I'll try it when I get home in about an hour and post back with the result for all to see...

    Cheers eshrules.

Top marks to Eshrules for hitting the nail on the head!

A quick change of the COM port settings as suggested and it's cooking with gas!

    Thanks again!

I also purchased a lead from Alpha-bid some time ago. Came to use it the other day but dont seem to have a CD. (Probably lost it rather than not received it).

If someone is willing could they make the drivers available on t'internet or e-mail to me?

I bought a cable from Ebay similar to
    http://cgi.ebay.ie/VAG-COM-OBD2-DIAG...QQcmdZViewItem

It works with Vag-com ver 409-1 which comes on the cd with the drivers. The software is shareware version.

At first I couldnt get the cable to work, in the vag-com options, I had com3 selected and I thought it was connecting to it. I was wrong, don't know why it was detecting the cable on com3 but anyway.

Plug in the cable to laptop, open up device manager and select
    + Ports (com &Lpt)

then open up - USB Serial Port (Com12) <- Mine was Com12, yours might be different!

Then go to port settings tab (see pic) and click on advanced.
    com.jpg

In the advanced screen, change the Com Port number to "Com2",
    advanced.jpg
if its free! Close and save all the device manager stuff. Start Vag-com and in the options screen select Com2 and click test. It should detect the cable and then you save and connect it to your car and away you go!

    Enjoy, hope this helps!

Oh one other thing, the Vag-Com 409-1 shareware version is actually the full version, it just needs to be activated.

Not that I have done this, BUT I have heard that you can download a cheat for 409 to unlock it. It is supposed to use a prog like <removed> to copy two bin files every 5 sec to a program files folder which confuses Vag-Com into thinking that it is the full version.

Not that I would know, but its ment to work perfectly!

If you want the full program, or the shareware program activated, hand over the money to the people who spent years developing the software.
