Can someone advise if it is worth to buy cheap cables from Ebay for diagnosing pre-OBD2 cars (earlier than 1996)? Does VAG work with these? Anybody has exprience that $15 cables off ebay did not work? is there another place selling these cables for about same price as ebay ie not for a few hundred bucks as ross tech sells?

Man, unfortunatelly none of them suits my vallet, need just to diagnose why my fricking 94 jetta starts like russian locomotive, especially after new stock spark plugs, distributor, coolant temp sensor, oxy sensor, coil, fuel pressure test. VW charges $92 for diagnosing the problem, I thought I could better invest these money.

Surely a lead is a lead??
What's the difference? Tempted as i've recently bought another laptop from fleabay (old one with lots of different ports) and I've pretty much decided i'm going to keep my car for a year or so
Ex Golf GT TDi 150. Then an Evo 8. Then a Honda S2000. Now an Evo 5 (and a little pug 106)

    *clears throat* ahem

i sell both the vagcom cables AND all singing, all dancing scanners. BOTH have their pros and cons...

Cable has the advantage that you can get a full copy of vagcom (or free shareware if just using for diagnostics), stick it on your laptop and away you go, the power is at your fingertips and there isnt a right lot vagcom can't do....

Scanners have the advantage of not needing a power source, not needing a laptop and not needing software. they are more expensive to purchase initially, they more than pay for themselves in the long run.

having both in my posession, i actually prefer to have the scanner, the vagcom only ever comes out when i need to monitor readings realtime or i need to work with immobilizer/central convenience.

for what you want to do, id say get a cheap cable (£12 from me) and download the shareware version of vagcom. ALL my cables work or you get a full refund.

Do your cables work with all versions of VAG-COM? Because guy at rosstech FAQ says that new VAGCOM versions work only with their cables and not with others' cables. Is this truthful?

I have full version vag com as i use it weekly for my private work(favor for a favor ,no money changes hands mr tax man)so the flea bag lead wouldnt le me have full license hence i used gendan who set me up £260 AND I USE K WIRE AND CAN AND WORKS ON EVERY VEHICLE I HAVE TESTED EVEN THE R8(which is a3/tt software)If you only need share ware then you should be ok but it will have limitations.I would buy from eshrules and then you at least can talk to him if you have any issues.

that much IS true, yes. their new leads are a dongle, in that they contain the authentication within. the older style leads, required the software to be authenticated by means of a code.

which you purchase, depends entirely on what you intend to use it for. a 3rd party lead with shareware is obviously not a patch on a fully registered official rosstech lead.

if you only intend to do basic diagnostics, get a 3rd party lead and shareware mate. anything more, and you should consider a handheld scanner or a lead like the above mentioned
