Brake pads warning light

Just come on. How much is left of the pad? is there a industry standard? Service due in less than 6k. Will they last to the next service under "normal" circumstances? Anyone with any experience of this? Did you have to replace the discs? Car has done 71k. This will be the 3rd set of pads. Thanks

If the light has just come on there's probably still a little left as there will be a saftey margin built in. It not something I mess around with and usually change my pads "before" the light comes on......maybe its just a me thing?

I know if you were at an Audi dealer they could tell you what precentage of pad you have left.......probably part of the diagnostics I guess!
Similarly with your discs, Audi again could tell you what percentile state they are at. You can see yourself by getting down close and feeling the edge to see how much of a lip you have and what wear has taken place....it'll give you an idea at least.

I'd say that the disc condition would be dependent to some degree on your style of driving for your mileage......I'm at 90k miles and my discs are original iirc although I think they'll need changing soon.
The pads?....For me, I wouldn't wait and would get them changed as soon as possible for safety's sake......at the very least if you run them too far you could end up causing damage to the discs in any event.

Thanks Jim. I'm like you don't mess about particularly with brakes and tyres, I was just curious and I may have considered doing the lot at the next service. I'd like to think my discs are ok as I'm not a hard driver.

I think having seen more than a few posts on the subject that the front pads and possibly discs even can be done relatively easily, by most people with even some limited knowledge......just a case of reading up on it first. There's plenty of posts here and or youtube vids that will give a good idea should you decide to do it yourself.

I could be wrong, but I believe the rears are a little more difficult and require VAGCOM ...something to do with the EPB!

On the subject of parts, I see some members talking about uprating this pad or that disc etc, but to be totally honest, I find that the OEM are fantastic. They really seem to stop the car very well and I feel confident in its stopping ability.
If I were going to buy them myself though I'd really like to know what the OEM are if anyone can chime in? I'm sure that some of the alternatives are good products and fairly priced, but if you're happy with what you've got, why change?

I guess mine will be coming up fairly soon.....the reason I'd like to buy the parts beforehand if possible is the discs. I find that the hub area rusts quite quickly and my alloys are always kept clean but this area takes away from the desired look. If I could get my hands on the OEM parts first I'd like to take some time and spray paint the hub area with a few coats and then a coat or two of lacquer. This in conjunction with painted calipers really helps to finish of that area of the car.
This is something I hope to do this weekend but with them on the car its a different job entirely unfortunately......still looks good, just not as good.

Anyhow, assuming you go to Audi and its pads only front AND rear you're looking at £258.00 job done

The light comes on at a nominal 3mm but they will be getting pretty thin in 6K and may damage the disc as you appear to use a set of pads in 24K Regards Peter

Genuire Audi discs and pads. Wear well and slow corrosion due to the high carbon content. If I was going for a regular alternative then ATE disc and pads. I have seen discs that were purchased on ebay that wore rapidly so beware of cheap parts. Regards Peter

Hi Skidmarks!, as you got 3.0 tdi your not going to fall into the fixed price servicing so you could be looking at about £349 for front disc and pads from Audi and probably about £250 plus for rear one. I did get quote but then did all discs and pads at home, there are different types of brake calliper for front and rears in service guide. If in your boot or in the service log the data sticker has PR codes of 1LG 1KD then they would be same as mine which were 321mm x 30mm discs on front and rear would be 302mm x 12mm. I put on Pagid discs and pads all round and work as good as the Genuine ones I removed no sequel/fitting or braking issues.

Textar/Mintex/Pagid are one company TMD friction and high chance make the genuine ones, my front brake callipers had ATE stamped on them. due to EU regulations any after-market pad or disc can not be worse quality or braking effect compared to genuine factory fit ones.

If you going to get dealer to fit they may insist on genuine parts....
