  1. Thump Vibration Inside On Idle

As the title says, anyone any ideas, it gets my passenger side ear after a while, like a deep slow bass drum, engine idle is fine.

I suspected the exhaust but so far it seems ok and doesn't sound gone from the outside, I still suspect a collapsed baffel inside one of the boxes, are there any hoses that could resonate combustion noise from the engine to the inside of the car, car does sound a bit GT under hard foot btw, sound goes as soon as you open a door, engine also sounds a bit tappety under acceleration and has done since VW Monkey replaced injectors.

Oh how much do I wish I'd gone to the rising sun rather than the goosestep, I had the Superb 3 years and it was it's name, this pile of scrap is a disgrace, my seat has worn a hole (1st time I've ever managed this) and the cheap foam they form the wings from is disintergating and needs regular hoovering to remove from carpet.

And don't get me started on VW dealers, once this one is gone, I'm adding it to my blacklist to keep all the French and Italian cars company.

This is getting a bit general now, but as others have posted, it's the luck of the draw. Production appears to be so sophisticated nowadays that final test appears to allow a certain percentage of less than optimum vehicles through. Add to this allowing "less than optimum" compontents through final test from component suppliers also and it's no wonder we end up with some dogs. So, who let the dogs out? The bean counters that's who! And, (it's not my subject) they appear to balance recall to dealership costs with increasing original quality costs overall.

But it can get worse. After enjoying my times with Rover P5 and P6 (seven years each) I went to Citroen several CXs and an AX. The CX series were developed over a number of years (from DS and ID) before introducing the XM which was a total dog! Which traded on the CX's reputation.

My Passat Mk3 petrol (snub nose type) did 160k before starting to burn oil, the head having never been off. My 5.5 had a soft knock from NSF at 10k, so-called "fixed" under warranty with top and bottom end bushes changed which stopped the knock for about 1k whereupon I traded in for this tFSI B6. Brilliant design and when everything works: simply the best! But let down by some stupid and obvious cheapening of components: plastic coolant impeller, cambelt change at 40k (sir!), a sad head unit that in 2006 didn't play .MP3 files, software issues, inlet manifold flap motor crunching its drive gears, and the sharing of many of the same faults as others have variously listed in other B6 varients. I've even had a aircon compressor seize leading to engine seize. I do remember in the CX the compressor doesn't operate until it's pully solenoid is energised! Oh, and the CX had break pad wear sensors at each wheel: B6 has NSF only

Do I really have to wedge a small cushion between my RHS hip bone and the Sport seat's swab to stop the rail causing me pain?
Does Wolfsburg care? Welp, I havn't seen Jezza review a new VW for a few years now, and 5th Gear panned the CC (or was it Phaeton?) Why?

Saw a new B7 in the showroom last week. Isn't that rad grill U G L Y ? And with its sharp edges each side, how come it passed tests? In the past, if I'd turned up for MOT with, say, a crunched wing showing such angles, it'd have to be gaffer taped off at the very minimum, or it's a failure

    That's progress...

I've had a look around while dropping the oil, I fitted a new filter cap and the boom is still there, I've seen this before on Skoda's where the snorkel (air duct to air box) isn't sealing properly, however the 2.0 PD is a different animal and I'm suspecting the braided hose that runs off the turbo along with the black platic one that feeds air from the air filter box, as I have the whistle and a mate recently replaced his turbo and the whistle returned I'm not sure the whistle means the turbo is dying, more a sound leak, does anyone have any clues, as the PD's get older they do get louder ime.

p.s anyone know what the cooler under the inlet manifold is for, it has the same type hex nut plastic drain cap as the oil filter.

Ok I've found something, when you put the key in the egr valve normally buzzes for a few seconds, mine is making a dull sound just before the egr buzzes, anyone have idea's?

I'm also not conviced that the harsh acceleration sound isn't thx to VW because it's since the injectors and box service that it's sounded that way.I'm going to pull all the air tubing off tomorrow and inspect it for cracks/leaks.

Really had enough of VW now tbh, really wish I'd not gone 2.0 PD, it's not a good engine imo, I'll stop short of blaming VW for the turbo as I believe that blame lays with Garrett looking at how many PSA/Toyota/Vx/Ford turbo's are sirening or exploding.

Just had a night ear to it, it sounds to me like exhaust resonation, as the car has done less than 60k is it likely the baffels have collapsed inside, or are the pipes themselves a weak spot on the B6, I have a feeling it sat a while before I bought it so that probably hasn't helped, I don't want to go to the expense of a new system if it's not needed, I've an MOT due so I guess if the skin is gone anywhere he'll find it, although a quick look says the skin is intact, it's doing my ear in since it started, I've all sorts of hums and pulses going on and a lady said she felt sick the other day, I put it down to car sickness but if the throb is in the rear this might set someone off as well, opinions?

OK I've nailed it I think, the burrrr noise inserting the key is the fuel tank pump priming itself, although I'm not sure it should be that loud, also when sitting on idle you can hear it burrrring away and this is what I think is the vibration, placing your head on the seat you can feel and hear it working away, as the lady I mentioned that felt sick was sitting on it this is probably what was causing her to feel ill.

Anyway is this likely to fixable using an injector cleaner and a new derv filter or is it an indicator of imminent failure, if it is anyone know how much the pump costs and where best to get one, and will it last much longer, looking at pictures I don't think it's cleanable by removal and I suppose it's my own fault for running low for so long, but thats the eco climate for you.

Well doesn't appear to be that either, had seat out and unit sounds ok, I'm noticing it's worse if I'm in the camber of a road parked and someone is sat next to the kerb in the back, as I had a small hole in my inner NS CVJ a while back I'm wondering if it's gone dry and the sound is travelling, going to open it up and re-lube it soon so that's my next port of call.

Ok, had seat out again, pump sounds ok, I can hear it prime when inserting the key and I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that as my mates 1.9 makes no sound and another who has a 2.0 Touran makes a small whizz sound, mine does a burr sound, vibration is worse when ppl sit on passenger side of the car, has anyone else come across this before?

    UPDATE

Fitted new fuel filter and the prime noise has gone, won't know about the vibe until later when it's quiet, anyone know if there is a replaceable filter in the tank pump also as I noticed soots in the old filter fuel, could be dirt could be oil, think it was dirt as it was more like mist than a lava lamp in my drain off bottle, car is more responsive and smoother now, and that violent starting seems to have gone as well, so Tommo if yours is still doing it try a new filter mate.

Well it's still there and seems worse when the car is fully loaded and leaning towards the passenger side in a camber, I'm all out of ideas and living with it and hoping the mot finds something to shed light on it, fed up with, and fed up with the car full stop, it was fine until VW did the injectors and DSG service.

Does anyone think it could be the DMF on it's way out?
