Double din conversion

I have an early style b5 with the early radio. It is a single din with the extra wide front. I am looking to see if i can change it to a double din as fitted to some of the later style b5's. I want to fit an after market sat nav which would have to be double din as i don't like the pop out variety. Is it possible to do this conversion? Mine has front and rear fog lights and heated seats so all but one of the switch holes is populated. I also have climate control fitted.

From what i can see of the pictures i will need a to replace just about all of the switches and climate unit if all of them are compatible. Are the plugs the same if i can swap and are the wires long enough to reach the new positions?

I am sure i am not the first to do this but just want to save myself the trouble of finding all the problems over again.
