    If you could post a picture of the damage it would be easier to comment. They are saying that something has got trapped between the rotating cam and the follower, that follows the cam profile. This bit of grit or metal has scored the camshaft and the follower. If it was a single incidence, the offending particle may have been lost during an oil change so no further damage will occur. In this situation you can ignore the damage and leave the engine alone. As we can't see "how much" damage was done, it is difficult to say whether you should ignore it or fix it. My gut feeling is to say, ignore it, as you haven't had any problems during your ownership and the fault probably occured before you bought the car.
