Very cold start this morning, the engine started, but there was a bit of a bang and then it ran roughly misfiring for a while before it settled down, there was also a big puff of smoke out of the exhaust. The car has run fine since, but I have noticed its noisier on startup for a while now, but this morning was exceptional. The car hasn't been serviced for a year, it's on the long life servicing. I'm concerned in case this is a sign of something about to go wrong. Any advice greatly appreciated.

No it's not had the cambelt done. Would that be due to be changed at 60k?
It did the same thing again this morning when I started it from cold. But it settled down again after a few minutes and was able to drive it with no problem.

it is extremely unlikely that your car has a genuine 60k miles plus it is over 5 years old so it is well overdue a timing belt and it could snap and wreck your engine any day now !

Hi thanks for the posts, the 60k is genuine, I've had it since new. I've been checking out the cam belt change and Audi confirmed it would be 5 years or 75k. I'm also getting various views on what needs to be done. Apparently there is the cambelt, then another fuel injection type belt and another tensioner, plus the water pump should be changed. I've had a quote from Audi for £800 for most of this. Does that seem fair, and a private garage quoted £721.
Plus I've had it into a garage today and they think that the problem with the starting is the fuel pump, so either i need a software update from Audi ( this may fix it) or a new fuel pump, which is £1500!!!! Has anyone any advice on whether the fuel pump is likely to be the problem.

Cambelt kit inc tensioners, water-pump and auxiliary drive belt. £800 seems steep given I paid £240 at an Indy for that lot, granted it was on the 1.9TDi but his price for the 2.5 was £50 more.....genuine parts too.

I doubt if anyone could do a proper job on a 2.5Tdi for that money. The front of the car has to come off and it takes all day.I have seen it done by an expert.even the good parts are £300.The fuel pump seems nasty I would get a second opinion.Did they use diagnostics?

Contitech (who make the parts for VAG - as I have a genuine VAG kit fitted to mine and the belt has the VAG logo and Contitech by the side of it) for the most "common" 2.5 TDi engine is £98.40 for the kit from ECP - it's a wee bit more for the VAG boxed one. Aux belt is £22 ish, water pump ~£40. When I talked to him, the Aux belt was pretty much constant price across the 2.5's and the water pump was pennies difference between the 1.9 and the 2.5. That's what he told me, I didn't have a 2.5 so didn't really care, just passing on what an ex-Main-dealer technician advised. He's been bang on the money on everything else on my 1.9 so I don't doubt him. It took him 3 hours to do my belt, water pump, aux-belt, and change all the front bulbs inc re-setting the headlamp aim and putting it all back together - inc dropping the front into service position and changing the coolant (which added a tiny bit to the cost but made sense to do as the pump was off). And yes, diagnostics before/afterwards as it was him that told me one of the parking sensors was showing intermittent before it first started playing up...
