    Hi All,

I suspect my lift pump (in tank) has died... Car showed a fuel error then promptly died 1 km later running out of fuel.. But I have 150Kms - 1/4 tank left. Put 5 litres in and off we went. I filled it right away and it's been fine since.

The question is.. Is there anything else to check first? Is fuse 28 related to this pump?

And if it's defo the pump who sells them (other than Audi)

    cheers

How do you know you had 1/4 of a tank left? The sensor might be wrong.
I would keep some fuel spare in a can and run it down to 1/4 and see how much it takes to fill the tank.

I know because only 45 litres would go in. :-)

and the fault codes... Means nothing because it doesn't say if as a result of transfer/lift pump failure or the actual reason for the problem. Anyway I checked the 01 - Engine - Advanced functions - Output tests 03 and listened to the fuel pump in the tank. It's whirring but that doesn't mean it actually lifting fuel.

is your car a quattro? if it is it will have a saddle fuel tank that goes over the transmission tunnel. there is an electric fuel pump one side of the transmission tunnel and i think it's called a jet pump on the other side so that both sides of the tank can be emptied. i'm sure it's a sign that if the jet pump has failed your car will run out of fuel even though there's fuel left in the tank.

    Hi Paul,

Yes 3.0 TDi quattro. That's exactly what i was thinking but there is some confusion as to the terminology. Perhaps you have the correct term. I'll google it.

Is there any info on here as to the replacement?

    cheers

found it, it's called the suction jet pump and seems to be fitted on all quattro models. in the audi manual it states " if the suction jet pump is defective, the engine can stop due to fuel starvation when the tank is still quarter full" doesn't look that bad a job to replace but you need a special wrench T10202 to remove a locking ring. your codes could be down to the fact the engine was starved of fuel

    hope this helps

94 euro at Audi.. Not as bad as I thought.

next point should I change the electric pump whilst I'm at it.. Any history of reliability problems with that?

    cheers
