A VW main agent has told me that there's been an inspect/recall for B6 2L tFSI 2006 (BWA) engines to check whether the ignition coils are pre- or after a certain issue number. And if pre- change them. But my local VW dealer says there's not one. Nor has the main dealer from where I puchased in Wales (and had the 2nd and 3rd services done) advised me
Does anyone know of such a recall existing? And if so what's the reference number?

I've had the Flap Motor issue recall done: by a FlashROM update

    Thanks

There was an issue for a lot of FSI engines made up to about 2008. Only 2 part numbers of coil pack are consdered okay, all the others get replaced FOC. It mainly affected Golfs but since the same engines were in the Passat there's no reason why it shouldn't be in the frame as well.

You can check yourself very easily by pulling the engine cover, undoing a couple of bolts and springing the clips on the cables on the coil packs. You don't need to remove them. Do a search for "coil pack recall" and you will find loads of info, including the recall number and the coil pack part numbers which are okay. If you can't find it, PM me and I'll see if I can find the info I had. There's a post somewhere with my name on it where I posted the info you need.

My dealer claimed that my Golf was okay from looking at the VIN number, but this is not correct and you (or they) have to look at the coil packs themselves to make sure you are in the clear. It isn't a proper recall so they won't ask you to come in but it's a "service action notice" or something like that and they only take a peek if your car is in for something else.

Thanks for the quick reply, much appreciated. Have had a look around this site and found some stuff:

    (Teflon 21-3-2-11 VwAudiforum.co.uk)
    GTI Coil Packs
Can anyone shed any light on " Recall 28F5-W-Ignition Coil"? I believe it affects GTI's from
sometime between 2005 and 2007. Or any other recalls for a 2007 model, since my car hasn't had any
    yet?
My car is due in for it's next service and free MOT soon so I might as well get this investigated at
    the same time.

    Re: GTI Coil Packs
the 2lt FSI BWA engine is affected by the recall, which involves replacing the ignition coils which
    have a certain part number.

    Re: GTI Coil Packs
I have given you the details, the recall (upgrade as it is now called)is a matter of replacing the
coil packs, 2lt FSI 150hk 200hk and 230hk are affected. We have a list of coil part numbers which we
refer to, if the the coil part number which is on your vehicle is on the list, then it will not be
    replaced

(Crasher 20-5-2008) <not sure if this relates to BWA engine code>
Re: VW Golf GTi Turbo (AGU) Coil Pack
The Beru number is 00401000116, Bosch is 0 986 221 011 and Hella is 5DA 749 475-121. If you see one
of the other makes, tell me and I will give you the number

    (GolfGTI180BHP 21-10-2007)
I have read somewhere "Probably the most highly publicised was the faulty coil packs used in many
engines. The 1.8 Turbo engine suffered the most with this problem and a broken coil pack would
result in a very poorly running engine or a non running engine. VW issued a recall on many of these
cars and replaced all the faulty coils with an improved design. Despite this there are still plenty
of older Mk 4s out there with the original coil packs in them. It is a little known fact that in the
vast majority of cases VW will replace them free of charge even out of the 3 year warranty period.
I am also interested if anyone else knows of any other common problems re: My model and year.

Anyways, the inspect/recall _does_ exist, so I can have it booked in.
Still leaves the question as to why major dealerships (one where I purchased and had two services done), and one where I had other recalls/stuff attended to didn't do it <sigh>

Welp, used Beadles Dartford: and they were very slick in replacing all four coils under "Workshop campaign 28F5". Can't say I've noticed any improvement in overall performance or consumption as yet but havn't done a long distance run.
They also carried out "Workshop campaign 92B6" which is replacing vacuum servo pipe which believe relates to turbo (?)
This number was also referenced in 2008 when previous dealer changed wiper motor cap under recall but failed to enter this into VW's central computer record for my vehicle.

In previous post I'd referred to them and to where I'd had my second and third services done as being less than competetant in not advising of these recalls. I'm now told that this is because the recall wasn't a safety issue, only leading to the "occasional misfire" so isn't done until vehicle is seen within any of the accredited VW dealers' network. And added that this workshop recall wasn't issued until last year. So far, so good: but see following post regarding creaking suspension: grrrrr!"

I've now done some long runs but not as I used to drive. Except when I got badly burned up by one of them Golf GTI mk5s with all the nice plain clean lines, lowered suspension, fatty tyres, etc. So, it being clear on the M27 gave it the boot.
And cough, splutter, revs died, ECM light on dash, limp misfire mode. Just by a slip road. Pulled in, switched off ign, waited one min., switched on again. No fault light and running normally.

Got back home (average mpg 43 using cruise 75mile from Soton) and checked VCDS following morning:

Have checked three times since and have checked all adaptions and coding including throttle. Re-done all the adaptations (from a known good copy) and found throttle adaptation "not adapted". So followed the instructions on the Vag-Com site. But still gives the
same fault when I boot it. And there's a hill that I generally coast down in 2nd (Tiptronic gearbox) giving about 3,500-odd revs
when drifting down. It's a favourite spot for MPS Traffic to do a collar (Bostall Hill, Bexley) That flashed up the warning light too although it went out almost immediately.

I've emailed three times the main dealer where I got the coils' upgrade done. But have been ignored.
Meantime is there anything else I can check in VCDS to give a possible cause? It's always on cyl 4
