Hi, When I tried to start my 2.5TDi this morning, the big red brake symbol ("!" inside a circle) flashed at me when I turned the key, along with the double-beep we all know and fear. After checking what the symbol meant, I checked fluid levels then decided to have another go at starting the car, then driving it slowly to the garage near where I work. But when I tried to re-start the car, the starter motor slowed down really quickly, then there was some solenoidal clicking from behind the dash and the doors locked themselves. Does this sound like a dud battery? I've put in on charge and used my wife's car today. I've bought a replacement battery just in case, but would appreciate some other suggestions on what might be wrong. The car had been sitting on the drive since last Tuesday lunchtime. No indications of any problems at that time. Battery is about five years old as I recall, which doesn't seem like a very impressive lifetime. Thanks for any ideas W

A low voltage spike while cranking causes this. Yes it is a sign of a dying battery

Thanks all. Put it on charge for 24 hours, all good now. Expect it will degrade, but no doubt the problem was made worse by a week sitting on the drive and some chilly weather.

At least I know what the problem was - an easy solution when it does properly give up!

Not impressed with battery though - a five year old HD Banner unit should last longer than that??

If battery is serviceable, you might be able to top up electrolyte solution with distilled water so plates are covered. This will probably be a temporary solution though and you'll need to replace in near future.
