Glow plug light flashing

Hi All,

I had the flashing glow plug light come on yesterday (Engine management system warning), and a full scan is shown below. Car starts but hesitates for a few seconds before it fires up.

I have a 2004 Audi A8 3.0 TDI Quattro (4E D3) model. The car had been left on the drive for about 4 weeks as I had wait for replacement tyres to be delivered and fitted. As a result I am not too concerned about the battery regulator faults as I think they are related to the battery being drained over those 4 weeks.

However I am wanting to resolve the Glow plug fault and wanted to know if the scan below is definative indication of faulty glow plug or if I should investigate further before booking it in for replacement glow plugs. I am fairly competent at DIY and service the car etc.. but the access for the glow plugs is tight and therefore a little reluctent to start messing around with this

Any ideas on likely costs for getting the 6 glow plugs replaced and the EGR valve cleaned?

Any help/thoughts appreciated.

If you clear the fault, does it return?
A low battery can cause all sorts of codes to appear in various modules, so could be a red herring.

If it is a glow-plug, it isn't necessary on these engines for starting, even in winter, they are more for reducing emissions and post-start noise.

Think carefully before changing one, as the risks of it stripping the threads or snapping off may make it worth not bothering.
Plus-gas them for a week or two before hand and invest in good quality glow-plug socket.

Thanks for your reply.

I cleared the fault codes and the glow light (flashing) and fault code returns as soon as I try to start the car. Sorry if this sound silly but when you say try "gas them..." what are you referring too?

I drove the car around (before the issue came to light) to allow the battery to charge up (got it to 100% on the MMI meter). however do you think before I do anything else I should simply trickle charge the battery using a charger to ensure a proper charge then try and scan again? Also Do you think it is safe to drive with the above or could this cause further damage?

Plus-gas is a make of penetrating fluid who's name has gained generic usage, a bit like WD40.

It does sound like glow plug or glow plug circuit as the fault comes back.

I wouldn't worry to much about the battery if it is holding charge.
You can trickle charge it if you like, but use the charging point above the battery for the -ve connector.

Not having a working glow plug is unlikely to do damage. If you can get to the one you suspect you can test it with a multimeter or test lamp in situ.
It does sound as though you will have to get it done to stop the warning light (which could also mask another fault if it is already flashing)

I appreciate your feedback on the post. I think I will book it in to a reputable garage that knows the Audi's and get the glow plugs replaced. Will probably get the full set replaced while they are doing them and maybe the EGR valve cleaned out as well given I have just hit 70k miles and I have heard that this is a job that needs doing around this many miles for good maintainence.

Hi all,

Just a quick update I took the car to AMD in Thurrock and they replaced all 6 Glow plugs and cleaned out the EGR valve for me and the car looks like it is all good again on that front now. Only a couple of minor items o/s which are to replace the battery & the check the parking sensors now which dont work every now and then so sounds like a loose connection on one of the sensors - after these 2 jobs get done the car should be sweet once more.
