I have just bought 8 month old A4 Avant SE multitronic.
    I have two questions

    1. What are the standard tyres for 17inch wheels mine has 225/50/17 98Y xtra load.

    2. What is the correct pressure for these tyres. All advice I have seen is to look at the drivers door piller but the tyres on the door label do not seem to match what I have fitted.

    3. With cruise control on if I go down a hill faster than the cruise is set to, the car brakes automatically. I wondered if you can turn the auto braking function off?

    Thanks
    Adrian

Can't help with 1 & 2 as I have 18in wheels but why would you want to turn off the auto braking? Surely if cruise is set it's meant to maintain a constant speed.

Find the auto braking really unnerving. Have never had this on a car with cruise before. If possible I would like the car just to go faster down hill then the cruise to pick when the car has slowed to the set cruise speed level.
I wondered if the automatic braking could be turned off?

I think the standard tyres are 225/50/17 94Y if its a 2.0 diesel, you didn't say.

The door label should list all of the tyre types although I wonder that the extra load 98Y's are used at all, you can therefore only go with the pressure for 94Y's.

I have never had a serious issue with the auto braking but there again I have a manual, and there is perhaps enough engine braking to cope with all but the most serious of motorwauy hills, so the only time I notice this is if I select cruise when I know I am going much faster.

My conclusion is the OEM suppliers such as Continental appear to have a 94 load index option (or both options), but other manufacturers do this size of tyre in a 98 only.

I'm looking at changing now and noticed that 98Y seems to be more commonly available. As long as they match on each side of the axle, I don't think this is an issue.

What make/model of tyre do you have fitted?

I also find this feature of the cruise control unnerving. For example if I come to a 50mph restricted section of motorway, I set the cruise to 55mph to avoid being caught on the average speed cameras.
However, if you then accelerate when you pass the restriction, but forget to disable the cruise control then if you take your foot off the accelerator. just for a second - the car applies the brakes back to 55mph. I think this is really dangerous, as the car brakes for no reason apparent to other road users.
If anyone has the cure to disable this feature, I'm very interested.

Am I missing something here? Desmo you set the cruise at 55mph in a 50 zone to avoid being caught by the average speed cameras ??? Then YOU forget the cruise is still set and accelerate to I assume normal motorway speed and become surprised when the system does what it is supposed to do when you lift off, namely control the speed to what you set it to. If you want to use cruise control, once past the restriction reset the speed using the stalk (hold it up for longer than 2 seconds and the cruise speed will increase by increments of 5mph), you will not then encounter the braking effect.
To disable the feature...turn cruise off.
