    Hello,

On my 2006 A6 Allroad 3.0 tdi, I decided to change the rear discs and pads today but I cannot get the pistons to wind back.

For years I have used a tool I made which I made from a core plug with two spots of weld inside and welded a shaft onto it so I just put it in my cordless drill offered it up and it wound back the calipers on several Audis and VWs over a number of years.

Now I find that there are three notches in the end of the piston instead of two and the diameter is about 39 mm instead of 37 mm. I have had to make a new tool modifying a ceramic tile hole cutter and it turns the end of the piston fine and I apply pressure as before but the piston refuses to go in.

Is there something else I should do? This car has the electric handbrake and I suspect that the gubbins mounted on the back of the caliper has to do with that, has something else got to be disconnected before being able to rewind the piston?

I have a long journey to do tomorrow and am reluctant to put the old pads and discs back on.

I hope that someone can help me soon.

    Regards,

    Michael

    Thank you f33nix,

I have not been able to find the post you mentioned, if you remember how you found it I would be grateful to know.

Put it all back together with the old discs and pads for the next few days and will maybe have another go in a week or so, I hope I can find a bit more info before then.

The discs I was supplied seem to be wrong anyway, laying them flat they have a maximum height of 50 mm but the ones on my car measure only about 42 mm and there is maybe less than 1 mm wear on the bottom side of the disc. When offered up they seem to foul the caliper support bracket. Disc diameter, thickness and holes are the same though.

    Regards,

    Michael
