    Hi

Has anyone installed a dipstick on their B8 A4 rather than rely on the MMI system to tell you the oil level?

I see what looks like a shaft for one in the engine bay, with a sort of plug in it... Am I right to assume I can buy a dipstick from Audi, remove the plug and then insert and use as normal?

Yes, that's all. IIRC you can get them a bit cheaper than the dealers though.

Much as I like Audi, they do seem to be good at re-inventing a less good version of the wheel sometimes, the dipstick issue being one of these.

I swear to God i spennt like 5 minutes trying to find the dipstick location on my new Audi, only to realise that there isn't one. All you have is a tube where a dipstick may appear to belong.

I have read in other forums that in order to check the oil level you need to warm the engine up up by driving something like 30-40 kms otherwise the sensor will not register a reading at all. So let me get this stright, I actually have to go on a fairly long trip just to check my oil level? What?! This is ridiculous!

Please, if anyone knows where I can get a dipstick for my 2008 B8 A4 2.0TFSI, please please PLEEEEASE let me know. As much as I love to drive my car, this is some next level thing.

When I last checked the MMI reading, it was just above 'min' (~10%). I think I may need to add some oil at some point methinks.

But come on Audi, you make amazing cars but ruin it with the smallest of things.

I have a 62 plate 163 TDI Technik and tried to find a dipstick about a year ago, contacting both the dealer and Audi.

I have in front of me a letter from the Customer Service office in Sheffield (dated 12 April 2013) saying: "...the oil is measured via the MMI unit........ As such, this takes the place of a conventional dipstick and therefore, there is no part available for order".

I bought a Laser 4807 dipstick today for my 2010 A4 B8 2.0 tdi quattro. It came with no instructions.

The latest instructions on Laser website are different to those posted by Crasher.
    Laser 4807.jpg

I have set it to 62mm as per instructions and it barely registers at the '0' level with oil.

Anybody used one of these lately with a 2.0 tdi engine? Should I be using 46mm as the start mark?

I bought mine from Sealey Audi Engine Dipstick 600mm VS600ED | eBay

Set top aduster ring to 46mm and fill oil up to level 25mm on lower scale - (make sure stick is fully inserted ie the bevel face of adjustment ring is sitting right in the dipstick hole) my MMI always reads "oil level OK" for me at this level.
As sanity before you remove oil - set adjuster to 46mm and Dip check to see where your current oil level is at on lower scale
