shaking and smoking !

Hi,
Started up my 2008 A6 2.7tdi today, and the engine started to shake, and thick smoke came from the exhaust.
Also had a whirling noise from the engine bay.
Shaking stopped after a few blips of the throttle.

Turned the car off quickly !

Was very cold this morning, so I checked the coolant header tank and that was still fluid.

Is this all just a symptom of the cold weather???
Got the AA coming out to check it over, as i didn't want to drive it.

AA guy has had a look, The smoking was just as suspected the cold weather.

But the Juddering and whirling noise , is down to the DMF/Starter motor. He advised me to get it to a specialist.

This sounds expensive !

I've been getting this with my 3.0 TDI on start-up from cold for the last few days too. Thick white acrid smoke, goes away after a few seconds. Anyone else had this / know what the issue is please? :s

AA guy said it normal for a diesel especially a big diesel to smoke on a cold day.
Hopefully mine is going in to a specialist tomorrow for a check up.It has no other symptoms of a DMF (shaking though the clutch pedal etc)fault so fingers crossed it just the starter motor not disengaging.
