I've looked into them and when I change mine I will fit another DMF as they have come down in price so much it's not worth the risk of going solid

Ive asked all over the place the same question. The negatives seem to outweigh the positives TBH. One particular 'biggie' is the increase in transmision noise, you can get alot of rattle from the gearbox whilst idling. Im a time served mechanic but no longer in the trade, but theres something about the SM flywheels that i just dont like. When the time comes il be using another DMF.

I am assuming you have a 1.9 TDI? If so, try visiting your local taxi rank. A lot of Skoda Octavia taxis (Golfs in disguise) have been converted to solid flywheels. Talk to the drivers, and take a ride in a converted one. Don't forget that the proper conversion kit will have a sprung centre plate instead of having the springs in the flywheel, so it should not make a huge difference.

The valeo smf conversion has the sprung clutch to stop the vibrations....u will not tell the difference. Also skoda sell smf conversion kits...for taxis as above
