05' A6 2.0tdi Engine Rattle

Hi All,

Please help!!

About 3 months ago my engine noise got slightly louder and started to produce a rattling sound which increased with the revs. I had this looked at and was told the rattling noise was coming from the flywheel.

I booked the car for repair last Friday, when I got in my car and switched on the engine the oil pressure light came on.

I called Audi and they advised that is was no longer the flywheel and that it was the balance shafts which was quoted around £1200.
The car has not left my drive since.

Please advise on what the issue might be and best way around it.

Hi Lewis.

I'm not a regular poster on this forum, but if you try the excellent search function you'll find a wealth of info regarding oil pumps, balance shafts and chain tensioners.....

Some of the info is pretty scary - if your engine wasn't run for long with the oil pressure light on tho, you may get away with the £1200 oil pump replacement fix.

You need to get this done as your oil pump has failed. You cannot drive the car in this condition as you will destroy your turbo and engine.

Unfortunately, you have no choice but to change the offending components. Depending on the age and engine code of your car, there is an upgrade parts kit which will reduce the likelihood of it happening again. COunt yourself lucky you have not driven the car in this condition as you would be looking at another £800 for a new turbo.

There is no cheaper option so don;t be tempted by anyone. Just get audi to trailer it and repair it.
