  1. Question GT TDi 150: Clunking noise from the front end - are the front suspension mountings to blame?

    Hi all,

Over the last few months I’ve started noticing a clunking noise coming from the front end of the car. It’s got progressively louder and more noticeable recently. I can’t think of any other way of describing it other than a clunking noise that occurs when I drive through pot holes and on generally bumpy and uneven road surfaces.

I had the rear bushes replaced in July so sort of think I know what I’m looking out for and think it might be the same scenario on the front as the sound and feeling is very similar. To further strengthen the case, when I had the rears done in July, it was noted on the service sheet that “Offside front suspension mounting deteriorated”.

I’ve owned the car from 55k and it’s now at 103k. According to the service history it had never had the mountings replaced, front or back, before I got it.

Does it sound reasonable to suggest at this stage that it’s probably the front suspension mountings causing the clunking and rattling sound?? Or another thought was the anti-roll bar bushes?

Any suggestions and help is much appreciated.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

i have noticed a similar noise coming from my 130 Tdi. I know that the front and rear lower suspension arm bushes (this was noted on the MOT certificte), they are about £6-10 eah for the bushes from VW. Not sure how to change them as my Haynes has not been delivered in my local Halfords, but theres sure to be a guide on here somewhere.

could be the top shock mounts, shocks, anti roll bar links or bushes or as above the bottom are bushes, best get it looked at to make sure and then get the parts fitted

I had a simular problem with my mk4 Golf. It was the anti roll bar bushes. The bushes are cheap but VW will was £200 to fit them. I had mine fitted by a mate. Good luck

More than likely bushes, but you will need to get the car up in the air to do it, ideally. Having said that, just check your wheel nuts are tight first :-P
