I had to take the carpet up on my old B5 once when the washer line broke and the carpet had a plastic backing which meant that the water could not dry out from the foam underneath.Should be easy to lift the edge and check but I would be sure that this is the case with car carpet generally

I'd try to chemical neutralise it as suggested, and see if you can lift the carpet so that you can dry it thoroughly. If you've got access to a Polti steam cleaner, then you could certainly try that too.

I have bought some Valet-Pro enzyme odour eater from elite car care after a chat with them, i also purchased some Gliptone GT11A leather conditioner for the seats in my s-line quattro.

The enzyme odour eater is diluted 5 parts water to 1 part odour eater and then sprayed onto the surface where the smell is, it is a very pleasant lemony smell and the enzymes get to work within 24 hours, so i have mixed it in an old empty auto glym interiour shampoo spray container and generously sprayed the carpet.

I have then covered it in cling film to stop it drying out too quickly. This should be the end of my smelly car!!

By the way i can highly recommend the gliptone GT11 for leather interiour, it soaks in well and smells just like leather should, great stuff.

Either that or the lemon will sour the milk and you'll find that you have a spectacularly bad niff to contend with ;-)
