Now then, after two years of driving an A3 1.8 T sport, i've rencent required a mk 4 GT tdi, I know the A3 isn't the best handling car in the world, but the golf is bloody awful! both standard cars, both 16' wheels but i had toyo tyres on audi and cheap budget ones on golf, should the golf have a stiffer suspension on par with audi being a GT? both have same mileage on, I think a suspension over haul is the way forward on golf!

It's true, it is very squishy.

When I had my MK4 GT TDI I fitted eibach springs and sachs gas dampers. This lowered it 30 odd mm and totally transformed the handling. A rear arb will also further add to the handling although I never fitted one.

With the Gt Tdi's the 130 bhp had standard golf suspension unless you had the option of sport suspension which came with the Montreal 2 Alloy wheels too. The 150 bhp comes as standard with the Gti sports suspension.

    Yes it they did.

They were a 10mm drop from standard but still very squishy.

A vital mod in mind view on the MK4 TDI's and mine had a tendancy to bottom out at the front very easily with stock suspension and bearing in mind how low the sump is anyway, it just makes sense.

Ironically, although lowered, either with just better springs or coilovers, tightening up the suspension stops the bottoming out.

If you do swap out the suspension, make sure you renew the front top mount rubber bushes and the bearing.

Also replace the rear axle bushes with the harder polly bushes and retro fit rear anti roll bar.Replace the front anti roll bar with a stiffer type and again polly bushes to all the front suspension, this will improve the feel and response but a lot of labour, try big boys toys in essex they have full suspension kits.I have done this for a family member and it was a differant car after, but it depends on your budget http://www.bigboyztoys.co.uk/shop/
