On my Mk4 some water had corroded the wires between the headlight switch and dimmer switch etc.

Might be worth getting some replacement switches off Ebay?

That's something that fortunately my mechanic dealt with

Although changing just the switches, which turned out to be the main reason, was easily done by myself. Although this was on a Mk4 not a Mk3, so the process could be different. Worth checking with your mechanic maybe...?!

I just spent a couple of days dismantling the dash on my daughter's 1.0 1998 Polo as she couldn't see the instruments at night.
All the warning lights worked, just no illumination. Couldn't find any bulbs to replace, no fuses blown...
Eventually went to VW main agent for a fault diagnosis.

The problem was that the rotary instrument dimming switch had been turned down....

Yes I know I should have checked but she does have a degree.

    Try it !!

    Rgds dave
