The only grade of 'MTL' shown on the Redline website is the 70w80. I have seen the 75w80 grade advertised as 'MTL' and that is the grade which most of the favourable reviews concerning VAG cars seem to relate to. I am probably going to go for 75w80 myself for this reason. I believe both of these are supposed to be unsuitable for gearboxes/diffs using hypoid gears and I'm not sure if the earlier A4's are of this type(?) I considered Mobil 1 and Fuchs Titan Sintofluid (which I have read was identical composition to what the A4 had in originally) but was put off by these being GL5 rather than GL4. Since the shift on my car is fine once warmed up, the idea of using something with a runnier consistency when cold is tempting, but the comparative absence of "success stories" for MTL 70w80 leans me toward the slightlier heavier grade. All of the foregoing is not offered up as being authoratative and I'd suggest doing a few general searches on Audi World, etc as well. It's just the gist of what I found from a few happy hours' trawling... I'd be interested if anyone knows different before I splash the cash...

Have just found that A4's Passats and any vehicle with the engine mounted lengthways in the chassis must have hypoid gears, hence the need for an "enhanced GL4 lubricant" - ie synthetic... The Haynes manual covering petrol & diesel A4's specifies: Synthetic gear oil G50, viscosity SAE 75W-90. From the same source (Passatworld) I read that G50 "comes fro the VW spec 501.50 Fuchs Sintofluid 75W-80 is shown on the Fuchs website as conforming to that specification, albeit that it is GL5. Since the Redline is a mail-order job and I believe I can get the Sintofluid from the likes of GSF, that may swing it for me.

I intercepted the order just as John was processing it but he put a fly in the ointment by saying we had no MT-90 in stock and neither did the importer. I told him to send the MTL, put it this way it is what has been in my box for four years and I am not taking it out.
